How Do I Add a Contribution to Other Committees? About Support/Oppose Memos
When adding a contribution made to another committee, it’s important for both financial and compliance purposes the data entry is correct.
First, navigate to the record of the committee you’ve made a payment to.
In the Transactions section, click the + (Add) symbol to add a new transaction, then choose Expense.
Enter in the available details of the transaction. The Election should reflect the election cycle and correct date for the specific election you are supporting or opposing. In the Reporting Code drop down, select 011 – Political Contributions.
Next, click Specify Support/Oppose and fill in the applicable details.
If the donation is paid to a candidate committee (Organization), it is to support a candidate. Please be sure you use the candidate (Individual) for the Support/Oppose section. Note: The candidate’s record must already be in your database to properly link the supporting transaction.
On Elections: We understand that larger committees, especially PACs and SuperPACs, may handle a large number of transactions in support or in opposition of candidates or other committees. In some cases this may mean adding many individual elections with their specific dates. ISP strongly recommends entering the correct election for each race in which you’re supporting or opposing another entity.
It is possible to cut corners on data entry by creating one generic election of the correct type (general, primary, etc) with a ballpark date. Doing this comes with the caveat that ISP’s date-triggered AI-reminders for time sensitive filings such as 24- and 48-hour reports will likely be incorrect for many of the transactions. The election dates may cause unforeseen warnings or complications in your Compliance reporting down the road.
