How Do I Find Donors Who Gave to the Primary but Not the General?

Using Advanced Search, you can set specific search criteria to find exactly what you’re looking for.

First, start by locating those who donated to the Primary election.

  • Area: Contributions
  • Field: Election
  • Relationships: Is Any Of
  • Value: (select the Primary election)
Click the Add Rule button. This will find all donors who gave to the Primary.

Next, back in the Add Rule section:

  • Area: Contributions
  • Field: Election
  • Relationships: Is Any Of
  • Value: (select the General election)

This time, click the Add as Exclusion button. This will remove any donors who contributed to the General. Click Run Search to generate the report and see the results on screen. Again, this report will show all donors who contributed toward the Primary but not the General.

How do I find donors who are maxed to the Primary, but not the General?

For fundraising purposes, it can often be useful to locate donors who have hit the legal limit toward the Primary election, but not the General election. Set up the following search to locate those donors.

Your first rule will find contributors to the Primary election.

  • Area: Contributions
  • Field: Election
  • Relationship: Is Any Of
  • Value: (select your Primary election)
  • Add Rule.
Your second rule will specify that we only want people who have given the donation limit for the Primary. By entering this second rule as a compound rule, we’re saying that we want it computed in conjunction with the first rule.
  • Area: Contributions
  • Field: Total Value
  • Relationship: Is
  • Value: 3300 (or whatever your legal limit is)
  • Add Compound Rule.

Your third and fourth rules will exclude all donors who are maxed to the General election. First, we specify that we want the General election and that we want to exclude these entities.

  • Area: Contributions
  • Field: Election
  • Relationship: Is Any Of
  • Value: (select your General election)
  • Add as Exclusion.

Your final rule will ensure that the General election donations we excluded above are only those that are at the legal limit.

  • Area: Contributions
  • Field: Total Value
  • Relationship: Is
  • Value: 3300 (or whatever your legal limit is)
  • Add Compound Rule.
